Economic Hardship Reporting Project

There are presently no open calls for submissions.

The Economic Hardship Reporting Project supports a wide variety of nonfiction stories related to inequality and unfairness in America. This includes features, reported essays and reported opinion pieces.

For opinion pieces or personal essays, submit the completed piece to economichardshipreporting@gmail.com. Only previously unpublished works are considered.

Formatting: Times New Roman 12 pt. font double-spaced submissions, 1000 words or less.

For features or longer articles, submit a developed, reported pitch indicating access where necessary and intended article length. Also include links to at least three your best previously published stories as well as a brief bio. We generally only support work by accomplished journalists.
Suggest publications where you might want to co-publish your proposed piece. If possible, please, approach potential publications to gauge their interest before submitting to EHRP: our support is conditional on co-publication. Except for extraordinary circumstances, our contributors are paid in full upon successful completion and co-publication of their work.

Photo/audio/video submissions

We’re interested in innovative visuals and audio work that tell new narratives about economic hardship. Photo essays, portraits series, and mini-documentaries are all welcome. We support a range of styles from reportage, to formal portraits, to experimental video. All of these projects must be co-published by an editorial outlet if they are to be supported by EHRP, although we have on occasion funded events and screenings tied to our co-published podcasts, photography and documentaries.

Individual submissions are limited to 30 photographs or a five-minute clip. You are welcome to submit as often as you like.

Submit Online

Send low-resolution images (72 dpi) using our online submission form along with a link to your work and a pitch or a query letter attached. All images should include captions in the metadata or an attached caption document.

Thank you for your interest.
